PIKES PLACE MARKET

 Welcome to Seattle!

Search “things to do in Seattle” on any search engine, and the Pikes Place Market will be in the top five every time. We know what you are thinking, this is just another farmers market tourist attraction. You are partially right, Pikes Place Market is sort of like of a farmers market, but on a much larger scale.

If you aren’t a fan of crowds, it is important to note that this market becomes extremely busy by lunch time. We made the Pikes Place Market our first stop in the morning to begin our adventuring. Fresh fish, specialty foods, crafty nicknacks and fresh flowers are just some of the goods you will find here. Although if you are on vacation, purchasing fish and flowers aren’t on your to-do, it is worthwhile to see it!

The market is also centrally located to a lot of other great spots in Seattle, so it’s worth a stop even if you are just passing by.

ORIGINAL STARBUCKS

1912 Pikes Place

This address is important to remember if you have any interest in visiting the original Starbucks location. Seattle is known for coffee in general, and if you spend any time here at all you will quickly realize how many options you have, including Starbucks. One hint is if the store doesn’t have a long line, it probably isn’t the original. We heard many people pass by saying they went to the wrong location!

You may wonder, why would you wait in a long line for the same Starbucks you can get anywhere? That reason is Pikes Place Reserve coffee. It was such an awesome opportunity to watch the barista make a freshly-ground, pour-over coffee made just for us just like they did in the beginning at the original location. Also, the baristas in this location were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and let you take your time while in the store!

PIROSHKY PIROSHKY

 Buttery, Flakey Goodness

So you just left the original Starbucks with your pikes place reserve coffee, and you have worked up an appetite after waiting in line. Then, you will be overwhelmed by the smell of fresh baked goods. It won’t take you long to realize the smell is coming from Piroshky Piroshky.

We opted for the ham, cheese and spinach piroshky and it did not disappoint. They are a little pricy, but the portions are fairly large! If you’re unsure which to try, we recommend selecting a few and sharing with your group. YUM!

THE GUM WALL

Yes, a gum wall

Although this stop will not keep you amused long, it is definitely something to see. For over 20 years, people have attaching their gum to the brick walls in Post Alley. The city cleaned the walls in 2015 to preserve the brick, but otherwise the gum wall has remained a “must do” in the city of Seattle. You can walk through the alley as you venture the city to take a peek or participate by leaving your own gum!

AMAZON SPHERES

The Spheres

The most important thing to note about the Amazon Spheres is the hours of public operation. As these spheres serve as a workspace for Amazon employees, access beyond the visitor center is limited.

10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month

Additionally, you must reserve an unguided tour up to 30 days in advance which seems to fill up rather quickly. You can do so at the following link:

Book Amazon Spheres Visit

Although we did not get to experience the full facility or tour, we did visit the visitor center. They offered a short history of the spheres and some interesting information.

VIETAMESE CUISINE

Try something new

Aside from coffee, Seattle is also known for their Vietnamese cuisine. We have never tried Vietnamese food, so Seattle was the perfect place to start. You will find many options depending on where you are in the city. Green Leaf was recommended to us by our Starbucks barista, but there are many other popular options such as Ba Bar.
